LOS ANGELES / LONG BEACH WATERFRONT LABOR NEGOTIATIONS UPDATE

Area Arbitrator Declares that OCU Picket Lines Are Not Bona Fide and Directs ILWU Longshore Locals to Return to Work; Longshore Locals Disregard Arbitrator's Order and Refuse to Work

(LOS ANGELES November 27, 2012; 9:00 PM) - The negotiating teams representing employers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach released the following statement regarding the status of negotiations with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union Local 63 Office Clerical Unit ("OCU"):

For the fourth time since July 2010, an Area Arbitrator ruled tonight that the OCU has failed to bargain to a good faith impasse and that OCU picket lines are not bona fide.  The arbitrator directed ILWU longshoremen and marine clerks, who had initially honored the OCU picket lines, to return to work.

However, the ILWU longshoremen and marine clerks are disregarding the arbitrator's order and have refused to return to work.  The employers are pursuing the industry's contractual grievance procedures in an effort to get ILWU union members to honor the arbitrator's award and return to work.
